Traditional Okinawan Isshinryu Karate

The style of Karate that we study is Okinawan Isshinryu Karate.

Isshinryu is a relatively modern system of Karate, that was brought over to the U.S. after WW II by the United States Marines who were stationed on Okinawa.  The style was created by the late Tatsuo Shimabuku, a respected Master of the Goju-ryu and Shorin-ryu systems of Karate at the time.  Isshinryu is a synthesis of both styles that incorporates the best of each system, as well as several of Tatsuo's own innovations.  The name Isshinryu means "One Heart School"

Isshinryu is a very practical, no-nonsense, self-defense, oriented system of Karate. (different from the many "sport" oreinted styles of martial arts that are popular in this area).

Isshinryu combines the best elements of the okinawan fighting arts into a practical, effective system of personal defense and physical fitness.

Karate training increases confidence, awareness, emotional and mental discipline, and is excellent for physical fitness. Isshinryu Karate leads to the development of a strong mind, body and spirit. A major emphasis of Isshinryu training is the development of a student's "Heart" (both physical and psychological)

Above:    The symbol of our style that we proudly wear over our hearts.  It represents a dream Master Shimabuku had when he was creating Isshinryu... one that he believed was devinely inspired.

This emblem really expresses the essence of Isshinryu. The Megami (protecting goddess) is half human/ half dragon symbolizing gentleness and peace, but with hidden strength should defense be necessary.
